Grown with purpose

In northern Tenerife, between volcanic fields and abundant sunshine, Madre Tierra Setas Exóticas was born — a farm designed from the beginning to grow in harmony with the island.

The project began in 2019, when Dirk and Anna discovered an abandoned pig farm in Buen Paso, a small town in the municipality of Icod de los Vinos, on the north coast of Tenerife. What started as an idea gradually took shape, becoming a plan and, thanks to local designers and the corresponding building permit, a real project.

In 2021, a local construction company undertook the renovation of the premises. Meanwhile, Dirk and Anna traveled to China to acquire the machinery and equipment needed for a medium-sized gourmet mushroom farm. True to its environmental commitment, the farm operates with an autonomous solar system — clean energy from a sun that is never lacking in Tenerife.

The first harvest arrived in January 2023, with Oyster mushrooms grown on local chopped hardwood substrate, mixed with Canarian wheat bran and rainwater, and sterilized in our autoclaves. Shortly after, we incorporated Shiitake and King Oyster. In 2024, by deciding to produce our own mycelium in the lab, we also expanded the varieties: Black Pearl, Chestnut, and Shimeji.

We sell our fresh mushrooms at farmers' markets and to restaurants. We package, cold-store, and deliver each variety ourselves. Additionally, we export inoculated substrate blocks to growers in Gran Canaria and La Palma.

We have recently expanded cultivation with medicinal mushrooms: Lion's Mane, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Maitake, and Cordyceps. Carlos has joined the team to manage the online store and the production of supplements in the form of powders, tinctures, and capsules.

We have already come a long way, but there is still much to do until all our products are available in every corner of the Canary Islands.
